What is the NDIS?

NDIS Frequently Asked Questions
Who is helping roll out the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is delivered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The NDIA works in partnership with community organisations, Local Area Coordinators (LACs), Early Childhood Partners, and state and territory governments to make the NDIS accessible across Australia
How the NDIS works
The NDIS gives people with disability more choice and control over the supports they receive. Once eligible, participants work with the NDIA or a partner to develop a plan based on their needs and goals. Funding is then allocated to access services like daily living support, therapies, and equipment.
Supports funded by the NDIS
The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports that relate to a participant’s disability. These may include:
- Help with personal care or household tasks
- Therapies and health-related support
- Supported accommodation (like SIL or SDA)
- Transport assistance
- Equipment or home modifications
NDIS and other government services
The NDIS works alongside other government systems. It does not replace services like education, health, housing, or aged care — but it complements them by providing disability-specific supports that those mainstream services may not cover.
Am I eligible for the NDIS?
To be eligible for the NDIS, you must:
- Be aged between 9 and 65
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident (or hold a Protected Special Category Visa)
- Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
Early intervention may also be available for those likely to benefit from timely support.
